Stuttering help was not available when I was growing up with a severe stuttering problem. The techniques used were from the 1930s and ineffective for me.
I was told to stutter on purpose (which was quite embarrassing). I also was told to remember my dreams so that the Stuttering Specialist could interpret them. This went on all through high school. It didn’t help my stuttering, but it did get me interested in psychotherapy. At that time they thought that stuttering was a psychological problem.
Stuttering help with modern treatments
Now we know that the cause of stuttering is not psychological, but is a physiological difference in the brains of stutterers and the way they use their brains to speak. Scientific research using MRI scans has shown that stutterers use the right side of their brain more than non-stutterers to speak. The part of the brain that turns thoughts into words and sounds is located in the left hemisphere of the brain. We don’t know why this occurs but think that stutterers are usually born with this brain difference.
Modern stuttering treatments reconstruct the speech so that more of the left hemisphere is used. This is shown by MRI studies that compare the brain before and after treatment. Prolonged speech program like the “Stutter-Free Speech Program” at the Power Stuttering Center use this knowledge to produce fluent speaking. The client starts with a very slow speech where skills are established to use at faster rates at the end of the five-day treatment program.
Stuttering help is available now but unfortunately, only a few intensive clinics in the US use these modern techniques.
