David's Story

How Does The Program Work?

A carefully managed Transfer and Follow-up program at home, school or work to learn how to use your new stutter-free speech in the real world that is guided and directed by your stuttering specialist.

Day (1)

You start out with a speaking rate slow enough that you don't stutter at all. We use a DAF (Delayed Auditory Feedback) machine to control this slow rate.

Day (2)

You start to talk at faster rates, still not stuttering, and learn to plan phrases to say exactly what you want to say.

Day (3)

We get you off the DAF machine. You won't need it anymore. You are talking stutter-free at normal speaking rates!

Day (4 & 5)

You and your clinician plan how you will use your new speech outside the clinic, in real-world speaking situations back home. The clinician walks you through this with weekly phone calls until you are able to talk stutter-free all day long with anyone you want.

Over the last 25 years of treating all types of people who stutter, almost all have learned to talk without stuttering by the end of the first week. Those who complete the transfer follow-up program maintain their stutter-free speech all day long with whoever they want to talk with. The intensive phase lasts 2 hrs each day for 5 days. Follow-up back home lasts about 6 months to 1 year of weekly phone calls.

The MPI-2 program includes an app that is downloaded to your iPhone or iPad. The app gives visual and auditory feedback about your voice during the treatment program and afterwards. If you follow the targets on the app you reduce or eliminated stuttering. The program lasts 2 weeks not including the middle weekend.

No, both mild and severe stutterers need to replace their stuttered speech with a new way of talking.

There are several things listeners can do to help the person who stutters. First, maintain natural eye contact. Just wait patiently and naturally until the person is finished. You may be tempted to finish sentences or fill in words but it is best not to do so because it can be very frustrating and demeaning for the speaker. Refrain from giving advice such as slow down or take a deep breath. Such advice usually hinders rather than helps. It would be far more helpful if you yourself speak in a slow and relaxed way. Be aware that people who stutter usually have more trouble controlling their speech on the phone. Please be extra patient in this situation. In general, let the person know by your manner and actions that you are listening to what he or she is saying, rather than how he or she is saying it. Being a good listener is the most effective way you can help the person who stutters.
