Two Effective Stuttering Treatment Programs for Stuttering Adults and Teenagers
There are only a few research evidence-based stuttering treatment programs for adult stuttering and teenagers. Below are two of the most effective of these programs.
Mark Power is certified to provide both programs, and also to train other professionals as stuttering specialists as well.
The MPI-2 stuttering treatment program is a recently developed, effective stuttering treatment program. It uses a special throat microphone and an iPhone or iPad app to provide real-time feedback to the client of their own voice. During the initial intensive treatment, the clients learn how to talk without stuttering using the app, directed by the clinician. Then they can take their app home. They are able to practice their new speaking skills in different environments with this program. The app tracks your progress over time. This way, we can ensure you remain stutter-free even in more difficult speaking situations. Thus, the app also shares your data with your stuttering specialist in real-time, using WIFI.
The initial establishment phase of the program requires daily office visits for 2 hours a day, Monday through Friday, for at least 2 weeks. After this, the client returns home and enters the transfer phase where the clients learn to speak without stuttering where they live and work. This lasts about 1 year and is monitored by weekly online video calls.
Below is a video of some successful MPI patients.

This Stutter-Free Speech Stuttering Treatment Program replaces your stuttered speech with a new way of talking that is incompatible with stuttering. We begin with two hours of therapy in the clinic for five consecutive days. You start this with a very slow rate of speaking during which you don’t stutter from the first day of therapy. Then, we use the Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) machine to help you control your speech rate. Gradually, we increase the rate until it approximates normal speaking. We take you off the machine now so you can produce stutter-free speech in the clinic by yourself for short periods of talking.
During the last part of the program, you transfer this stutter-free speech into speaking situations outside the clinic and at home. You will start with very easy speaking situations and short periods of talking and gradually move to more difficult situations when you are ready. This part of the program is completed at home and is monitored by weekly phone calls with the therapist. Success in this stuttering or stammering therapy program depends upon this carefully managed follow-up program that lasts about 6 months to one year of daily speaking practice situations.
